MIZORAM
Location and Extent
Mizoram lies between 210 56’N – 24031’N
latitudes and 920 16’E – 930 26’E longitudes. Sandwiched
between Bangladesh and Myanmar, its location is of strategic significance
geographically and politically, and shares a total common international
boundary of about 585 kilometres with these two countries. In terms of the
size, it may not be so significant as its total area constitutes only 0.64 per cent
of the total area of India.
The tropic of cancer,
i.e., 23o 30’N latitude cuts across the region in Aizawl district at
the southern periphery of Aizawl traversing places like Champhai, Chhawrtui,
Darlung and Phuldungsei etc. This imaginary line divides the region into two
almost equal parts. Mizoram is bounded on the north by Cachar district of Assam
and the state or Manipur; on the east and south by Chin Hills of Myanmar; on
the west by Chitagong Hill tracts of Bangladesh and the state of Tripura.
Mizoram has a total
geographical area of 21,087 square kilometers.
Its maximum dimentions – north to south is 285 Kilometres, and east to
west is 115 kilometres.
Administrative
Divisions
Mizoam is divided into
eight districts of Aizawl, Lunglei, Saiha, Kolasib, Mamit, Champhai, Serchhip,
and Lawngtlai with district headquarters bearing the same names respectively.
Aizawl is the capital city of the state. The state is further divided into 23
Sub-Divisions and 26 Rural Development Blocks (2007). According to 2001 census,
there are 732 inhabited villages and 108 uninhabited villages with 22 urban
towns, whereas in 2011 census there are 704 inhabitat villages and 126
uninhabitat with 22 urban towns.
